Allergies are abnormal responses of our body’s immune system. If you have allergies, your immune system normally reacts to harmless substances found in the environment. These substances (animal dander, mold, pollen, etc.) are called allergens. You have to undergo a skin test to recognize the specific materials that are causing you to have allergy symptoms. Generally, it is performed by applying a small allergen extract to your skin, pricking or scratching the skin to permit its exposure, and then evaluating the reaction of the skin. It can also be done by applying a patch in the skin that is worn for a period of time, or injecting the allergen under it.

To prepare for the test, your dermatologist will first conduct a skin assessment. This refers to the examination of your skin to consider the normal variants as well as the general changes that usually takes place. The changes can alter the vascularity (flushing, petechiae, purpura), temperature, thickness, turgor, and color (pallor, cyanosis, jaundice).

After the test, any inks and extract marks will be cleaned with alcohol to take it off your skin. Possibly, a mild cortisone cream will be applied to the skin tested to relieve you of any excessive itching. Using the results of the skin test, your doctor will be able to develop a management plan for your allergies.
